What is Cloud SaaS vs On Premise Software?

As the world becomes increasingly connected by technology, the number of different software options available to measure and improve business performance can be overwhelming. One important choice for any decision maker is whether to use cloud software-as-a-service or traditional on-premise software license options.

But what exactly is the difference between cloud SaaS vs on premise software?

The problem with on-premise software

The most obvious difference is where the software is being operated from. An on-premise solution will run on-site at your business, often in a basic server room. You purchase a software license and run the software yourself on your own hardware. However, there are many problems that need to be dealt with before you can use an on-premise solution. Your business will need to:

  1. Purchase and install servers. These purchases are usually budgeted across multiple years as a capital expenditure and have to be paid up front before you can start using the software.
  2. Have some technical resources available to install the software and associated services such as networking connections.
  3. Set up a process for making someone responsible for upgrades, backups, and troubleshooting any issues with the servers. This often means asking already strained internal IT teams to take on additional workload to operate the software you have purchased.
  4. Work with the software vendor to resolve complex issues specific to your environment that the software wasn’t designed to handle.
  5. Finally, you must go through the provisioning process. This involves importing your data into the software and setting up any integrations.

All this needs to happen before you can even begin to use the software. This process can be a potential nightmare if any of the steps do not go to plan. Anyone who has been involved in a traditional on-premise software deployment in a large organisation can attest to this.

How cloud SaaS compares

In contrast, the “cloud” refers to a service run entirely from the Internet via an external provider. Cloud services are operated by someone else over the Internet and you don’t need to worry about the technical maintenance.

To deploy a cloud based solution your business simply needs to do the final step we discussed above. This means evaluating the software via a demo, before commencing the provisioning process to set up your data and integrations. You don’t need to waste time and money learning how to run the software, the cloud vendor takes care of this. Most importantly, the vendor is already hosting in an environment that was designed to run that software with the best possible performance, reliability and security.

Difficulty and costs aside, there is a dramatic improvement in reliability with a cloud solution. Unless your business runs its internal services across multiple world-class data centres with 24/7 engineering and security staff, you simply do not have the same built-in reliability and security that comes with a cloud solution. In an increasingly global workforce with remote workers in multiple time zones, potential downtime is becoming unacceptable for business solutions.
